I'm a UK citizen and in 2008 married my partner in Jordan. It was in a court house.. signed all papers and documents. Husband has recently said that as it wasn't in UK that the marriage isn't recognised here. However when we registered our son the registrar said if its legally recognised in the country you were married in then its legal here in the UK. Does anyone have any info or experience of this?

Your marriage or civil partnership will be recognised in the UK if both of the following apply:

- you followed the correct process in the country where you got married
- it would be allowed under UK law

Why did your husband say that?

RedDiamond · 05/07/2020 19:13

There are no civil marriages in Jordan, but you can get married through a religious ceremony at a church or Sharia court.

@user187428496 we are separated so think he's trying to make out that it was never real

Did you get married in a religious ceremony at a church or Sharia court?

This is the UK government's stance on your marriage.
