Advice for a dear friend...

Best friends H left her and their 2 kids, 3 years ago. They have a joint mortgage. He stopped contributing to the mortgage when he left. He gives her child support once a month. But that's it. She has been paying mortage herself ever since. His parents gave them their deposit. Around £20k.
They are not divorced. Now wants to do remodelling/extension work to the house. Says its fuck all to do with her H as he's left. I've told her to get divorced and sort out mortgage, get his name off it etc, first. She says she doesn't have to give him a penny or allow him to force a sale until their youngest is 18. Youngest currently 9. Her home is lovely. If she adds to the value this will surely increase his share. I dont want her to be fucked over by him. Advice?

Depending in other assets then he may well be entitled to a share of the equity, and it could be court ordered before the youngest turns 18. Best to crack on with the divorce and sort the finances legally before she spends on home improvements.
