Hello all!
A family member will loan a significant sum towards my new property. What is the procedure for registering a legal charge they will hold over the property?

Check the land registry website, the procedure and forms are set out there.

Check with your legal advisor that your mortgage provider (assuming you are getting a mortgage) will allow this.

If you're buying something then you need to get your solicitor to act for you on that aspect too so it can all be registered at the same time. It doesn't have to be a hugely complicated document - if you google "Land Registry Form CH1" that's probably what they'll use.

Your relative though will need some advice albeit if it really doesn't want anything more than to record that they've lent you £X secured on the property, it won't be complicated.

PS: just to echo the PP, this assumes that you aren't also getting "normal" mortgage financing. I've assumed that as you've said that you are being lent a substantial sum, this is the only financing.
