Dealership won't give me back my car

Not sure where to write this, would appreciate some advice. So my car broke down in the worst possible time. Arranged for recovery company to take it to the dealership to get it fixed in the morning. In the evening of the same day dealership announced they are closing all their branches after the lockdown announcement. Everyone who is affected will be contacted directly, no contact was made, no way of contacting anyone in my local branch. Contacted customer services, they said all brunches are shut, no work is going to be done until lockdown has lifted, fair enough. Asked towing company to take the car back so I could maybe find someone else to have a look at it, they need written permission from dealership to go and take it. Dealership is refusing to give permission to do that, refusing to help with anything at all, making different excuses about why they can't assist and just said I am not getting my car back. I have never dealt with anything like that, maybe someone more experienced can suggest what to do? I live in a rural location, have young children and no transport at all to go and get essentials for ourselves.

You say dealership- is the car relatively new and having repairs done under its warranty then?

Had they started work?

What are their actual excuses? Do they completely accept your version of events?

Unless there's something else, it's a bit of a head-scratcher!

Can’t help but offering support as my mum ordered a reclining chair to sleep in as she can no longer get in bed, due for delivery the day before lockdown, midday rang to say sorry theres an emergency elsewhere can we come tomorrow? Yes of course
Afternoon comes and we go on lockdown, they rang at 9am next day saying sorry not coming
My mum gets swollen legs as can’t get in bed, this was to help her
So annoyed as it’s from a mobility store so all items are for people with additional needs

So watching with interest

Car is relatively new, did't buy it from them but thought it would be a best place to take in because of car's make. Called small local garage first, that was what they suggested too. I don't know if they have started any work, probably not because when arranged for car to be taken in they were saying they would try to get it done in next couple of days. They announced they are closing on the same day later. It's my property and I want it back whether it's fixed or not! Excuses varies from 'we are closed just now', 'we won't be dealing with the issue because car wasn't purchased from us' (not sure how is that relevant where I bought it). I asked for a courtesy car if they can't release my car back to me to which answer was also no. Explained my circumstances and all I got was 'you are not getting it back until we open again' What do I do?

I work for a car dealership and we are giving customers their cars back - only have the odd member of staff about but we are arranging days and times so people can collect. Have you tried contacting the head office? Which brand is it?

AdvicePlease456 · 03/04/2020 11:56

@ClientQueen
Nobody is answering head office phone. It's Arnold Clark.

@AdvicePlease456 try twitter or FB if you can, that usually gets some attention...

Apply to the HQ of the vehicle makers. Eg Audi customer services. Make a complaint. Make it really publicly. Also give big sob story about impeding eg you from volunteering/key worker getting to work or whatever.
