Notice period whilst on the sick

I’ve been off work for the last 5 weeks and on Friday with the blessing of my current employer I applied for a different job, I was successful and gave my notice on Friday by email. My contract states a notice period of 1 month, I’m signed off for a further 3 weeks which my employer was aware of. I have been employed since Oct 18.
I’ve received an email today advising that due to the circumstances they will release me this Friday.
Can they do this?
Should I get paid for the month?

You need to clarify with HR what they mean by “release you”. If they’re essentially putting you on garden then if you’d notice period is one month you’re due full pay for the remainder of that month. What does your contract say about sick pay? If you’re only entitled to statutory sick pay then they only need to pay you in full for one week of your notice period and SSP for the remaining weeks. They can’t just terminate your employment ignoring the notice period and not pay you for if though unless you mutually agree to that.

At a meeting last week I was told I was entitled to 2 months full pay sick pay and 2 months at 50% - in total at the end of my current sick note I will be at 8 weeks with a further week of notice period left?

As ComtesseDeSpair says, they must pay you for your full notice period unless you agree otherwise. So they must pay your sick pay and, if you have a week at the end of your notice period where you are able to work, they must pay you in full for that as well even if they tell you not to bother going in to work.
