I found a great little car on auto trader for my sons 17th. I have saved and saved up for this car for months. The seller is a trader and has about six other cars for sale. I had the car checked out and all fine, I called the guy and said can I put a deposit down he said yes fine if the car sells I’ll give it back.

So I put a £150 deposit down, now I haven’t been able to get hold of the seller for love or money.

I’m going to have to suck it up aren’t I? Or do I have any recourse. I just feel so stupid.

When you say you had the car checked out, did you, or someone else, actually physically see the car? If yes, I can't see that this is a scam, it's sounds a bit elaborate for such small returns. Is this seller local? Have you been round to try and find them? Have you checked online to see if there are any reports of shady dealings from them? Perhaps the person is ill/lost their phone etc. Try phoning from a different number about one of the other cars for sale - see if that gets a response.

It was checked by a website to make sure the car was legitimate. As in not written off etc. He is selling other cars via auto trader but doesn’t have a website.

His reviews are mixed. One of his reviews that I’ve just found says he didn’t return calls another says he is a great bloke etc.

Did you use a debit or credit card for the £150 deposit? If so you potentially have some recourse through the cc company or your bank.
