Property Issues - Retrospective works

We live in a 12 year old property and have been contacted by the original builders saying that a vital piece of the structure is basically missing and they will be fitting it retrospectively. It's a big job, 10-14 weeks, full scaffolding and roof tile removal. All done externally. I don't really understand how the building (s) we're signed off in the first place tbh. We've been offered £500 compensation which I think is an insult. We will be without natural light, adequate parking, along with increased heating and electrical bills and builders noise for three months. I have a one year old and a second baby due. This is beyond stressful. Where do I even start with seeing where we stand legally? Should I be worried about insurance, and the companies involved getting things right second time around? Are my kids even safe at the moment in this building. I have so many questions but don't know where to start with seeking help, any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
