Eviction help needed

I’ve name changed for this but am a long time poster.

My sister has just phoned in floods of tears as she has being evicted by bailiffs for non payment of rent. The house is solely in her husbands name and she didn’t have a clue about any of this. She was given 5 mins to leave, so only got out with the clothes on her back, her passport, work things and her pets. Her husband got up early and left to meet a friend, has refused to answer questions and is now not answering the phone.

She needs to get back in the house to collect clothes and personal belongings. The bailiffs have said this needs to go through the owner, but that they don’t have to let her in as she isn’t named on the lease. What can she do if her husband refuses to go back? We have tried to contact Shelter but they are extremely busy.

Also it seems he may have racked up other debts. If so, is she jointly responsible for these as she is married?

She is not responsible for any of his debts unless she also signed the lease, contract etc.

If the belongings are not collected the landlord will have to get rid of them so I expect s/he will want to facilitate your sister picking her belongings up.S/he may want her to clear everything out the house so this could be a bargaining chip - if the landlord lets her in to get her stuff she'll clear out everything so s/he doesn't have to.
