Car finance help?

I'm helping someone out of a very difficult and heartbreaking situation.

Won't go into all the details but amongst everything they have a car on finance through the company they took it out with and also are paying insurance on a car which is now too expensive for them to run.
The contract is for 3 years and they are about 8 months or so into it.

I'm yet to get all the details of the contract but apparently they are not allowed to sell the car and pay off the finance early. It would really help if they could get out of the contract/sell the car as how things are standing they are basically throwing hundreds of pounds a month at it which can really be used elsewhere for the foreseeable future.

I'm rather inexperienced in the subject but was wondering if there's any way around a contract as mentioned above?
Any way the car can be sold or returned whilst minimising the amount it would cost to do so?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a PCP arrangement? It sounds like it may be. If it is, the car belongs to the finance company and will go back to them at the end of the contract with the option of a large final payment (known as a balloon payment) if he wants to keep the car. If it is a PCP he can terminate early but he may have to make a fairly substantial payment to do.

From what I know so far there is no large final payment, the car isn't brand new and it wasn't directly from let's say the Peugeot dealership it's just on monthly payments until the last monthly payment is made.

In that case it is a form of hire purchase. He should still be able to return the car but may need to make a substantial payment to the finance company.

My car was on a hire purchase agreement for 4 years when I have a big payment left at the end still. I decided to clear my car 8 months after getting it because the monthly amount didn't make sense when I would have so much left ay the end. I was paying nearly 200 a month as it was.
Anyway it didn't go down well but I was able to clear the finance bit I remember having to pay extra to them to close it. Cant remember how much but was less than carrying on paying.

Hope things get better
