Counterfeit cheque

I received a cheque from a solicitor that was dealing with a car accident I was involved in
I banked it last week but my bank have rejected it claiming it was a counterfeit/fraud !
How is this possible? I have spoken to my back who can’t give me any further info and the solicitors are not giving me any answers either
Any advice ?

Clearly the only people that can answer your query are those who issued the cheque.

Who issued the cheque?

It may just be that it's been stopped as fraud, so you can cash it, which is sadly quite common. The bank won't be able to tell you anything else as they can't comment on someone else's bank account to you. Is your solicitor now pushing for another form of payment?

Is the cheque from your solicitor? If so it should be drawn on their Clients Account and there should be no problems with it. Speak to the solicitor and ask them to confirm what has happened. It can be difficult with Bank's but confirmation from the solicitors that they have issued that cheque should have immediately resolved the issue. If they don't know then ask them to cancel the cheque and pay you by via Bank Transfer. If the person you've been dealing with refuses or fobs you off contact the firms principal and if no joy from him/her then get in touch with the Law Society directly. They should be able to advise where to go from there.
