Knocked off wing mirror now panicking!

Went out today and on the way back I knocked the wing mirror off down a narrow country lane with houses on with a row of parked cars down the side. Turned around and went back as we were lost anyways and saw the broken wing mirror on the ground but I didn't know which car or what it was I knocked it off on. Mum reckons it was a van that was higher up so wing mirrors not level but I don't know what it was. The wing mirror has come clear off so it looks like we got the worst of it but we were on a very busy narrow road so I had cars behind me. Managed to get home safely and after reading things online about people getting arrested, fines and courts I'm now panicking! After having had aggressive driver behind me the other day I'm now getting frightened to drive.
I've read so much conflicting reports online(report to police= get arrested/don't report=get arrested etc )of what to do now I'm worried! Confused
Anyone who can advise on here? Sad

Bless you. You mean you knocked off your own wing mirror but couldn't see damage on any other cars? Don't worry. Of course you won't be arrested. I hit mine against a van once and not a scratch on theirs, not sure what they make them of!

Yeah I knocked it off, the car I looked at was further down but the one before it I don't think I saw anything on it, I was all a bit confused at the time and stunned as I've never done this before!

If you have an accident you should exchange name and address with the person involved. If you can’t, you should report to the police as soon as practicable and certainly within 24hrs.

You might find nothing comes of it, but if you don’t do this and someone else reports seeing you hit another car, you could have follow up action from the police. In most cases they’ll just put you in touch with the insurers of the other vehicle, but they can choose to take action against you for example for careless driving.

I know it seems an over reaction but I’d report it at the police tomorrow. Explain you don’t have the other vehicles details but you’ve discharged your legal duty. I’ve seen these things escalate and when I did similar to you I made sure I reported it to cover my own backside.

I've heard people say to call the 101 number elsewhere to report it.

I contacted 101 and they just referred me to contact my insurer!!!! So I couldn't even report it so looks like the police aren't even interested!

You knocked off your own wing mirror. Just replace it!

Update....I managed to speak to someone so it's been reported. I think I got through to the wrong number option before.

Well done. As I said I don’t think much will come of it, but your covered now in case someone else reports it. I know it seems over the top but it’s the correct legal position and I do know someone who got points after not reporting an accident he thought nothing of at the time.
