Can they deduct this from the invoice?

I started a 5 week trial for a job, with an agreed daily rate, on a self employed basis.
For various reasons, I decided at the end of the trial period that I did not want the job and I advised them accordingly.

I submitted my invoice and they have paid me today but deducted an amount for fees that they paid out for DBS check etc.
There was no mention in any of our conversations or e mail communications that I would be liable for these fees.

Can they do this?

TIA

I've applied for a few jobs that require a DBS and it usually says on the application that if a DBS is required and you are successful in getting the job, the cost (it a cost) will be deducted from your first salary?

Thank you Supersoaker. A DBS check is about £44 though is t it?

It depends on your contract but I am a self employed contractor and I am responsible for any costs such as DBS required for me to do the job UNLESS they have been agreed as expenses I can reclaim from the client before I began the contract
