What do I do with this Lost Property?

I've just found some (cheap, but it may have sentimental value) men's jewellery by the roadside.
I was going to hand it in to the local cop shop but they no longer have a front office. The nearest one is 13 miles away. The Police website seems to say that they aren't really interested in Lost Property these days anyway.
I don't do social media so I can't put it on FB etc.
What am I supposed to do now?

Note on a lamppost saying "if you've lost something, come and ask in No7?"

prh47bridge · 27/02/2019 19:26

You should make reasonable enquiries to find the owner - ask in nearby shops and offices, for example. If there is somewhere nearby that will display a card, you could do that. If you can't find the owner you can either dispose of the jewellery or keep it.

I don't know how the jewellery got there unless it came from a vehicle. It was under the bushes in the central reservation i.e. not an official pedestrian area. It's not an unofficial pedestrian area either - nobody ever takes a short cut across there.

Post on your local Facebook page

fourplusfour · 28/02/2019 08:49

you could try www.reportmyloss.com/uk
don't have any experience of it personally though

kittiefisher · 28/02/2019 09:28

I don't understand how ReportMyLoss works, from a Finder's POV. I don't see where I can view "recent reports of XXX items lost in ZZZ area" to enable me to find my Loser.

You can't. Reportmyloss makes reports available to the police and lost property offices, not the general public.

That. If you can't do that because the police station is too far away and you don't have social media, I'd be tempted to leave it where it is in the hope that the person who lost it will retrace their steps. It doesn't sound like too many others are likely to come across it.

kittiefisher · 28/02/2019 23:09

I went to the nearby supermarket this morning with a postcard to put on their noticeboard. They wouldn't take it. They used to have a pinboard where the general public could put up messages but now they only accept notices from Charities.

I don't think people would routinely go to the supermarket for lost property anymore. I'm 38 and I wouldn't.

If you won't put it back, can someone else put it on social media for you? It doesn't sound like you have many other options to try and reunite it.

TheInvestigator · 01/03/2019 08:28

What were you even doing under a bush on a central reservation which isn't used as a pedestrian area?

MagentaRocks · 01/03/2019 08:50

Ring 101. They will record it as found but retained by the finder, if it is reported as lost on reportmyloss then it will be matched up and the loser can contact you.

kittiefisher · 01/03/2019 09:02

In the good old days, I could have placed an advertisement for free in the local paper but they have closed the local office. I tried their website but 'Lost & Found' doesn't seem to be a category any more anyway.

arf. It sounds bad when you put it like that!
I was stationary in a filter lane, waiting for the traffic lights so I could turn right to the supermarket. I was about the 4th car in the queue, so a bit of a distance from a possible pedestrian crossing point (the traffic lights).

Ask somebody else to post it on fb.

StrongTea · 01/03/2019 09:10

Local shop, post office may have a notice board. Community council?
