Rodents Water board and compensation

Need advice urgently please. I have had a problem with rodents in my house. After calling in environmental health they have done some investigation and found that they were coming from the drains outside. The drain is the responsibility of Yorkshire Water. They came out and confirmed the drain had fallen into disrepair and then made subsequent visits to fix this and flush the drain. I have now got a big bill to clear my loft of rat droppings and re-insulate. ( Plus £180 bill I had to.pay environmental health to find the cause ) I complained to YW and asked for compensation. They say that as they acted swiftly to repair the drain they do not have to pay me any compensation. They have said that as a good will gesture they will reimburse me the excess on my house insurance. I don't feel that this is enough. Claiming on my insurance will increase my premium next year and the amount of stress this whole episode has put me under has not been taken into account. Advice please!

I'm afraid Yorkshire Water are right. They fixed the drain as soon as they were aware there was an issue so they do not have any legal liability towards you. The best you can hope for is to persuade them to increase their goodwill gesture.
