Divorcing, own house and renting a flat

My aged Dad is in the process of divorcing his wife. They have been estranged for years but living in the same house. He bought the house but she went to court many years ago to get her name on it as well as she lived there and shared some running costs. He is asking for house to be sold and money from sale split 50-50. Wife has been served papers but has been dragging her heels for many months, solicitors say she rarely responds. They are waiting for a date at court for financial hearing.

I would like him to move out into a rented flat, he has more than enough pension income to pay bills in both properties and pay the rent, I would pay the rent for him. He is worried though that if he moves out of the house this will jeopardise his position. Would it?

He is 84 and not in good health, the situation is stressful and he's been living like this for several years. We have found the perfect flat but need to pay now to secure it.
