Utility bill names and death certificate

Hi there
My father has died and my mother is being told by friends that even utility companies will need copies of the death certificate in order to change the name on the bills.

Is this correct? It seems a bit mad, and unclear from looking online. I thought they could just change the account holder name? Legal status is married.

Thanks for any help. We are registering the death tomorrow morning.

Sorry for your loss. Lots of places insist on a death certificate - most of them want the originals not copies so get plenty of the abbreviated copy when you register his death.

They will close your fathers account down and start a new account for your mum not just change the name on the existing account. The closed account is then final billed and this can either be paid my your mum or you can wait for it to be settled.out of your dads estate. For this they may want a copy sent in. Sorry for your loss.
