At my school there was a job promotion advertised to be a Maths leader. After the interviews the Head appointed a Maths lead but then also appointed a lead for PE. This was not advertised and this job was not made open to all staff. Is this legal??

Perfectly legal. Although in a school I would expect a recruitment policy stating that all vacancies will be advertised internally at least, even if not externally.

Yes the maths lead was advertised internally but the PE lead was a surprise to us all

Well as I say, it might be against an internal policy but it’s not unlawful.

I would be very surprised if this followed the school’s recruitment policy. Ask to see it.
