Work changing shifts - on maternity leave - any advice?

Can anyone advise on this please?

I’m on maternity leave at the mo, I work in a shop. 12hrs a week. Two weekdays. 2.30pm-9pm two days a week with a half an hour break each shift

Apparently the rota is changing and all colleagues have to work 4hr shifts only and have to have some shifts on a weekend day.

Manager hasn’t spoken to me yet as I’m off but apparently has mentioned she doesn’t want me to worry whilst on ML and just enjoy and we’ll sort just before I’m due back (January).

I cannot work weekends. I don’t have family or friends available for help (well here and there they could but not every weekend) and DH gets work at short notice (Friday morning for example) that he has to work Saturday or Sunday or both and he has to do it so I can’t commit. I can help out when he hasn’t got work but if a big contract comes in then his company would expect him to work a lot of weekends to help out.

I don’t know if any nurseries open at weekends and if they did I would need to pay a full day for a 4hr shift. My wages (minimum wage) wouldn’t even cover a 4hr shift, let alone all day.

I’ve worked there for 12 years. Originally as a part time assistant, then a supervisor, then manager, until I returned to work after my first child and went back part time assistant (2015).

So where does that leave me?
Can they do this?
If they say I have to work 4hrs at the weekend and I say I can’t, where do we go from there?
I’m happy to reduce my hours by 4, well not happy but it’s the only way I can see things working but then it won’t be ‘fair’ that everyone else has to work a weekend day and manager may not allow it.

I’m going to go into work when I can and chat to manager about it but in the mean time I’m freaking out.

Any help would be great.

Thank you.
