Changing surname

My husband and I would like to add my maiden name into our surname. The reason is we are due to have a baby in a few weeks time and my DS (not my husband's biological child) has a double barrelled name with my exes surname and my maiden name.

We thought it would create a much better sense of family for us all if we were all linked - DS, baby, myself and my husband - by my maiden name.

Is adding my maiden name in an easy process and is there any chance it can be done before baby is due in 4 weeks?

We're also hoping that adding my maiden name in will help when going abroad with DS. At the moment I have to take his and my birth certificate, my marriage certificate and a copy of the court order which states that myself and my ex can take him out of the country for a month without specific permission.

Will it help with this?

Yes, you can do it via statutory declaration - no need for the deedpoll route. A solicitor I know who changed their name did it by the statutory declaration route and it was accepted for everything from getting a new passport to changing bank account details.

Oh wow! That's great. I will look into it

I think PPs have answered your question but I wanted to say it's such a lovely idea!

Thank you everyone.

@rollingonariver - thanks. we were planning on changing our surname to my maiden name, but my MIL had a fit about it... even though she's remarried...
