Executor of a will dies before completing the administration

What happens when an executor of a will dies before the will is fully administered? The solicitors have taken a year to complete what appeared to be a simple will. Unfortunately the first executor has now died. There is a sub executor named in the first will - who should take on as the new executor - the named sub executor or the named executor of the first executors will? Also who decides how the estate is distributed - can the money be distributed before the house is sold?
