Deed poll.

Has anyone used deed poll recently? I am finding it very confusing. I am about to renew my passport, but I want to change back to my maiden name, I am not divorced so the passport office suggested deed poll.

Has anyone successfully managed this online?

I have been using my maiden name for the last 10years, so the tax office, electoral register know me only in my maiden name.

Thanks.

Do you have a driving licence?

Rainboho · 16/03/2018 16:13

I am currently changing my name with passport office - sent a deed poll. They have requested two examples that I am using my maiden name officially - my driving license and an official letter from a government department or a headed letter from my employer.

So even if you use deed poll they will likely still want more evidence!

Thanks. Yes I have a driving licence but that’s in my married name. Every is in my maiden name apart from driving licences, passport and bank account. Thanks.

The passport is easy once I get the deed poll thing, it’s the deed poll I am finding difficult. There are loads of companies online but I doubt they are legal.

there was a recent thread in Legal Matters in which a link to a free draft of a change of name deed was posted. Have a look for it and use that.

dementedpixie · 16/03/2018 17:00

Use the link i gave then as it is the official government website

Collaborate · 16/03/2018 17:21

^^ That's the one.

ConfusedDotty · 16/03/2018 17:24

Thanks Pixie. I had already checked that out.

Thanks.

It's the freedeedpoll on I was referring to. Forget about registering the deed with the court and putting an advert in the Gazette. It's all entirely unnecessary. The freedeedpoll site sets out precisely what you need to do - no more, no less.

^^^^

Exactly what Collaborate said.

ConfusedDotty · 16/03/2018 19:35

Excellent advice. Thank you all. All done. Just need the witnesses to sign now.

No no no no no no no! Witnesses are there to witness your bloody signature. You don’t seek them out after you’ve signed it.

ConfusedDotty · 17/03/2018 07:42

I haven’t signed it. I do have some understanding of the legal system. Thank you.

Can I just add, do a few copies to sign as you'll find some don't get returned from whoever you sent them to. I started out with 10 and am now down to three. Hmm

Collaborate · 17/03/2018 09:55

I haven’t signed it.

Sorry. thought you had.

As you were!

totorosfluffytummy · 14/04/2018 16:16

The gov.uk site quotes £36

Wrong thread ignore last

Justanotherfemale · 19/04/2018 20:50

Sorry but just yesterday I went to the passport office in London and had my new named passport in 4 hours.

Downloaded, free of charge, deed poll name change, witnessed twice and took with my old passport. Completely accepted and no problems whatsoever.

Collaborate · 20/04/2018 07:52

Well done Justanotherfemale. There is, it seems, at least a thread a week on this subject. Can we just keep this near the top of Legal Matters? Sums up how easy it is.
