She hasn't seen him or spoken to him for around 13 years but her older sisters was in contact with him and his girlfriend (although she wasn't that close to the gf)

What does she want? I'm presuming she thinks that she has some sort of claim on money from a man she hasn't wanted anything to do with for the last 13 years?

I'm not sure what the situation is in Spain, but in France she would inherit whether she likes it or not. She needs to get in touch with the legal representative in Spain. A quick google shows it is likely that 30% of his assets will be split between any children.

May be worth contacting the British consulate in the area that he died. They can probably advise you on what to do or who to contact.

Thank you very much for your advice and @MidniteScribbler he was an alcoholic who continually let her down and was absent from her life, she needs to sort it regarding funeral arrangements etc nothing to do with money (he doesn't have a lot anyways) it will probably cost her more in fees and funeral etc so stop being so judgemental and be nice :)

She is under no obligation to do anything unless she actually wants to...

British citizens resident in Spain are permitted to make wills regarding their Spanish assets under UK law. Therefore Spanish rules may not apply.

My DM and DF did this to enable them to leave all assets to each other and avoid having to split between their DC as they would have to under Spanish law
