DBS checks

Was wondering if anyone knew if a horse riding instructor, who is self employed and teaches alone, needs to have a DBS check? Is this something that parents considering using the person should be able to find out if they've got a certificate?

I would assume so. They will be registered as an instructor under an umberella body.
Anyone working in any way with children must be police checked..self employed or not.

My Dh is a rugby coach for kids, and he had to have one.

A dbs check is only required if there is regular contact with the same kid/kids. The problem is there is nothing written into the process that defines "regular "

I work for a child centred organisation and we require dbs checks if adults work with the same group of kids on 5 or more occasions however others define it as longer or shorter.

In Scotland anyone who has anything to do with a childrens organisation...whether they ever even see a child ( for an example committee member who has no contact with actual group ) must be PVG checked.
It flags up other things such as fraud or driving too ( handy if someone offers to drive mini bus ).
Lone workers such as sports / drama / music must also be affiliated with an umberella group such as Youth Scotland etc who do the checks.
Checks must be redone for every position held ( just an update ) and for every organisation including volunteering.
There is no max or min contact hours. Potentially working with children or vulnerable adults must be checked

Just to be clear, the law does not contain any requirements as to when a DBS check is needed. It simply specifies the type of roles where the employer can request a DBS check.

The big problem here is that a self-employed person can only get a basic DBS check which is inadequate as it only shows non-spent convictions. For working with children an enhanced check is normally recommended. You can't get a standard or enhanced check about yourself. In order to get one you have to use an agency that will apply for the check on your behalf. Alternatively you can work for an organisation that works with children, either in a paid or voluntary capacity, and they will get an enhanced DBS for you.

How would I go about finding the umbrella body they should be under? If he can't get one for himself and is self employed, I'm not sure if he will actually have one then.
