I bought something through a private seller for £30. The next day I notice a problem so contact the seller. They were very sorry and said bring it back and swap it if you want. I declined a swap (because of my now lack of confidence) and returned the item. Before I left they asked for my bank details so that they could bank transfer the money back. That was 6 days ago. I text to ask about it and was told as I was a new contact it would take 2hrs-7 days. I posted about bank transfers here to first question how safe it was to give out my details. People have commented that it shouldn’t take this long at all. I’ve made contact again today by text asking if they’d had chance to make the transfer but no reply. Where do I stand? I have texts where they say they will give me my money back by bank transfer.

Where you stand is that they owe you £30. If they don't pay you should send them a letter giving a deadline for payment and saying you will take legal action if they fail to pay. If they still don't pay up you can then take action in the small claims court but it will cost £25 to file your claim online. You can add the court fee to the claim but it may be throwing good money after bad.
