Can anyone clarify for me the legal position of a (just turning) 17 year old.

Child of impression can appoint a legal guardian and move out, and that I as the patent will have no say

If you live in the uk, they can move out at 16, without your say so.

I can back up what GreenKit has said for the UK.

I moved out at 16, however a lot of "Foyers" and Youth Hostels are closing down, the laws are now tightened on housing for young people.
