Help! Can we travel or not?

My son's UK passport is out of date. But his US one is fine. He has dual citizenship. Can I take him to France this Sunday? We've had a wonderful last minute holiday opportunity with free accommodation.

Google (highly recommended....) says visas not needed for US citizens to enter France. Getting back into UK will be another matter...

This could very well be an issue.

check airline / ferry requirements as well as country immigration requirements. As pp say, it's the return journey that is likely to be a problem unless he has right of residency in his US passport

You could see if you could get a renewal tomorrow? Or, I would take the british passport too and his birth certificate etc, and travel on the american one. Show the expired british one at customs alongside other documentation and explain. Hopefully you'll be OK but be prepared for a wait! You could even complete the forms for a renewal of the british one so you have that with you too plus endorsed photo etc. You could also try calling the passport office for advice...
