Car accident advice

Any help in this matter would be appreciated .
On Saturday a black guy bumped into the back of my hubbys car .... both got out and hubby asked for his details which he refused to give and wanted to move the car ( cars were not blocking the road )
Hubby just stood with a pen and paper and kept asking for his details ... he refused saying there was no damage ( there was to bumper and reversing light smashed )
He said go hubby are you just doing this because I'm black ??? Hubby replied are you having a laugh my wife is black
Next minute his passenger a woman got out of the car and got her hands round my hubby throat pushing him backwards onto his car.
Hubby never retaliated at the woman.
She was shouting abuse like a raging mad woman at him and slammed her mobile into his chest saying " ring the police if you F ing want to "
She continued to abuse him verbally and a witness stated she thought she was going to head butt him or knee him in the groin . My hubby luckily has a solicitor as the witness .
The guy still refused any details and drove off with the woman . Yesterday we had an appointment at our local police station ... the officer listened to our story and then visited the 2 people concerned .
They are saying if we press charges they will too and claim my hubby called him a black pig .
This is obviously totally untrue .
The police are saying if we take it further we would probably lose the case as the CPS take racial abuse very seriously and there were 2 of them against 1 of us so advised us to probably not pursue and let it go .
Yesterday we thought this is what we should do but after speaking to relatives and friends I am thinking this needs to be addressed . The police haven't even done him for leaving the scene and refusing to give details .
Any advice would be most grateful

Two people who have connection to each other. If I was definite I hadn't said it I would pursue it.

Agree with RedHelenB. Especially if you have an independent witness who supports your version of events.

No doubt about it he categorically didn't make any racist comments ....
