Anyone know anything about how this works?

DH has been an idiot. In the space of 7 days he got three (?!) tickets for speeding in the exact same spot with a fixed camera that he hadn't realised was there. The camera is in a 60mph zone and he was doing 68-71mph.

All three penalty notices have arrived. He has 3 points from 3 years ago. He's roundly ashamed is himself and has taken a significant ear bashing from me.

Questions:

1. Does anyone know the likelihood of being offered a Speed Awareness course?
2. Given there are three separate but identical incidents, is there likely to be a way to bundle them together?
3. He works an hour's drive from our house and visits other locations, so the car is central to his job. Will he lose his licence at 12 points, or if it goes over that?

Panicking really quite a lot. He knows he's been an idiot. Very worried.

He will most likely get banned. Someone I know did a somewhat lesser version of this and got 6 mo disqualification

Has he done an awareness course before ?

If he has received fixed penalty notices they have already ruled out a speed awareness course. If there was just one offence and he had no other convictions in the last three years he might have been offered a course.

The offences cannot be bundled together. They are three separate offences.

If he has reached 12 points in 3 years he may be able to argue against disqualification due to the impact on his job. He would argue "exceptional hardship". If he wants to go down this route I would strongly recommend consulting a lawyer who specialises in motoring law.

Magistrate here. To answer a few of your Qs.

No, they won't be bundled together as they are three separate occasions.

The 'totting up' provisions come in at 12 points so he will have to go to court for consideration for disqualification.

Minimum disqualification for 'totting' is 6 months unless you can prove exceptional hardship. Losing your job on its own is not classed as exceptional hardship, after all the idea is to punish.

What would potentially count is the likely impact on others around your DH, and how they would be effected. So, kids or elderly parents that need hospital visits?, if he lost his job would you lose your house? Be unable to support kids? Could he get taxis/public transport to work so actually no or little effect on others? Be prepared to be questioned on these, do not just expect to say them and it count.

I would look at the options for exceptional hardship and see if you think you have a case. Be aware though that it is subjective and not all magistrates view it the same, you have to ensure 2/3 would be convinced.
