Legal action(?) involving my ex, not me.

In 2014 my then boyfriend had a car accident. Due to ice he couldn't stop at the end of a minor road and crashed in to a car driving on the major road. It all went through our insurance and we heard no more. We split up in 2015.

I have just received a letter from a law firm. They are very vague on details (i.e. only the date of an incident involving a car is given, absolutely nothing else) but I presume it's this accident that they are referring to.

I've emailed the law firm asking for further information.

Can anyone give me any insight in to this? Ideally I would put them in touch with my ex and have nothing more to do with this. I'm sick to the back teeth of legal stuff and my last relationship, but presumably the insurance was in my name and ex was merely named on it.

It may be that they are "ambulance chasers" ie. lawyers asking were you injured in the crash? Do you want to make a claim? etc I'd give them a quick ring and ask what its about. You'll soon see if its one of those type cold calls

It's definitely them trying to get you to put in a late claim. I work on the other side of this. It's called claims farming and is being looked at quite negatively in the insurance industry right now. You have 3 years to claim but a late claim will always be challenged. Best to ignore them.

Hmm, not sure (although I hope you're right). They say that they're acting on behalf of a claimant, Sun Alliance. These weren't my insurers I don't think.

Claimant will be the other driver. Not enough info is in your original post. Was your ex driving your car?

Refer it back to the insurer. Whose name was the car and insurance in?

Pass any documents you receive to the insurer - were you insured on the same car? Insurers will deal with it.

Sounds like RSA are insurers pursuing recovery of their outlay. Royal and Sun Alliance. They will pursue your insurers not you / your ex directly unless there's a reason they decide they shouldn't insure - very unusual. But they need the correspondence first.

Yes, collaborate my ex was driving, I wasn't in the car.

The car belonged to me and was in my name. Ex was probably a second name on my insurance LIZ When you say refer it back to the insurer, what do you mean? The letter suggests that my insurer have passed it on to this legal firm, but I'm not sure how that can be when they also claim to be working for the other driver(?) or insurer(?).

Thanks Kirin I didn't think about that, I'll speak to my old insurers next. Still haven't heard back from lawyers after my request for more information.

Really appreciate your replies, I just felt so despondent with yet more legal stuff to do with my ex.
