Private car sale - advice needed

We sold a car through a private sale on Sat, after the guy had had a test drive and negotiated a price based on his view of the car. All paperwork completed and sent off. He came back later in the day asking about the clutch and is now saying the car needs a grand spent on replacing the clutch. We sold car as seen and in good faith. Does he have any come back on this? Do we need to do anything?

er no he does not. tell him to take a running jump. the standard position under UK law is "caveat emptor" - buyer beware. he drove it and bought it, his problem.

No it is not caveat emptor. That is not what the law says.

For a private sale the car must match the description (so if the seller says it has air conditioning it must have air conditioning which must work) and it must be fit for purpose. If the seller is a dealer the car must be of reasonable quality given its age and mileage.

Assuming you didn't say anything about the clutch or the general condition of the car you are in the clear.
