Retaining confidential information for 70 year/indefinitely?

I'm a childminder; I'm closing

I have been given a list telling me when to destroy my paperwork (by the council)

Some paperwork I am to keep for 70 years or indefinitely - no-one seems to be able to tell me what I should do with it then

Always allowing for the fact that I am unlikely to live for 70 years (I'm 47) and I definitely won't live indefinitely.

So what does DD do with it all when I die/go into home as presumably I won't be able to keep boxes of paperwork under lock and key there

Honestly- I wouldn't give it too much thought. Who is honestly going to come looking for it in 70 years? And it's not your daughter's responsibility to keep it. I'd put it in a plastic box in your attic/loft/garage and forget about it.

What type of paperwork do you need to keep for this long??

Insurance paperwork/accident forms/medication records & Employee health declarations

They must be kept in a locked box/drawer

I am tempted to deliver them to the council when I hit 65/67 (retirement age)

Check again. E.g. I think the statutory retention period for accident reports is 3 years.

Are you sure that's the right way round?

Might it be that you can destroy it or keep it? But IF you keep it, it must be kept securely and confidential for the first 70 years?

Nope according to the guidance it's to be kept

Some are for 3 yrs, 7yrs, 10yrs & actually it's 30 & indefinitely just checking......the 70 was from an email

I close on 31st March & I have a pile for every year until 2026 (to allow for the 10 years - invoice capitol, receipts cash book, sales ledger)

I am burning rather than shredding so I'll be keeping the house warm as I have 2 A4 boxes to be burnt already

I know this is a few days old, but just wanted to say sorry to see you leaving childminding. I used to mind too, and found your advice on these boards really helpful. Good luck with whatever you are doing next.
And the medicine/ accident records need to be kept for three years after the child turns 18 I think, incase they want to sue you when they reach adulthood.
