www.justice.gov.uk/courts/rcj-rolls-building/queens-bench/enforcement. This is the government website. Do not use a third party they just charge you money.

Bank manager is wrong, you can call yourself whatever you like. A deed poll's not a legal requirement. You can just put an ad in the paper relinquishing your old name and stating your new name. Totally legal. I changed my name yrs ago by typing my own declaration of name change and getting my Gp to co-sign it (as a professional person who knew me), again totally legal.

its because i got a interim payment, but wen i got divorced i did not change back to my last name so my account is in my married name and the payment in my maiden name.

I'm confused. Have you changed your name or not? If you have and the payment is in that name then why wouldn't the bank accept it?

pinkyredrose · 24/08/2015 10:36

Do you mean you've changed your name for some things but not your bank? If so have you any documentation in your maiden name, preferably photo Id? If so then take that to your bank and ask them to change your name.

wowfudge · 24/08/2015 10:47

You do not need a deed poll or even an announcement of any sort in order to revert to your maiden name. I've done it. You will probably need to provide a copy of your birth certificate when changing your details with organisations you are dealing with, but nothing more.

I had one ill-informed person at a mobile phone company who kept insisting I needed a deed poll because that was their policy. I spoke with a manager and set out the actual legal position, which they checked and then it was straightforward and they updated their records.

ilovesprouts · 24/08/2015 10:51

i go by the name say bloggs but the cheque is made out for smith for example so the bank manager told me i had to change back to bloggs by deed poll

Well you bank manager is just plain wrong!

Have a look on the Gov.uk website. Even the passport office only needs your birth certificate, a signed statement saying you have gone back to your maiden name for all purposes (this is just a letter 'To whom it may concern' - nothing fancy), your decree absolute and your marriage certificate showing both names. Take those documents in and they can make copies.

Tell him that legally you do not need a deed poll so he cannot insist on one for the bank's purposes.

wowfudge · 24/08/2015 11:02

Your last post is confusing as it's the reverse of what you stated earlier about the cheque being in your maiden name and your bank account in your married name.

pinkyredrose · 24/08/2015 12:57

OP have you changed your name or not?

ilovesprouts · 25/08/2015 11:53
