Business closure for reburbishment & pay

So I work for a restaurant, and a couple of months ago we were sold & bought. We all knew that there was a big refurbishment on the cards & were told it would be 10 days.
Found out this evening that the refurbishment will last a month in October, and the new owner says he won't be paid during that time & can take holidays if we want.

Is this legal? And are we entitled to any pay? Just seems unfair just to shut and not be paid for it when we rely on our wages, I tried looking on the internet but couldn't make sense of it!
