Unpaid court ordered compensation

Something on another thread has reminded me of this.

About 4 years ago we were the victims of 2 thefts. Our CCTV caught the perpetrator and he was charged. In court he admitted to several thefts on the same night and was ordered to pay a total of £1100 compensation, of which we were awarded something like £140.

We had one solitary cheque from the court for £1.40 which we didn't bank at the time as to actually go to the bank and pay for parking would cost more than the cheque. We decided to wait until we had 2 cheques and were in town. No more cheques ever arrived and stupidly I didn't chase it.

Who do I contact to chase it up?

We are owed 2k compensation but the criminal is currently serving a long jail sentence. I am not expecting payment. Frankly I don't the person should be released in the next ten years as he is a massive danger to the public.

I believe that the criminal has to pay compensation to the court. If the criminal fails to pay then the court might send him back to jail but the compensation order would be written off. (That is what the letter from the court say.)

Part of me thinks I can't be bothered with the hassle for the £140 but then part of me thinks well why should he get away with it.

I'll have a chat to dh tomorrow and see what his thoughts are. I wouldn't be surprised if the lad is in jail as petty crime is very much his thing.
