My DC, 15, has been accused, with others, of a serious sexual assault and is facing expulsion from school. Police have been notified, as have SS.

We have had little or no information from the school and no contact from the police. SS have informed us that a strategy meeting will be held next week.

Do we need to get legal representation in place for my DC?

What kind of lawyer do we need - Child Specialist? Family law? Criminal?
How do I find a good one in my area? What should I be looking for?
Will my DC be eligible for legal aid, or will we have to fund it as parents? When do I need to get them involved - if/when DC is interviewed? Before?
We have been advised to contact CORAM childrens legal centre, but they do not deal with criminal matters...so where do we go for advice?

Thank you in advance.

Check your house insurance to see if you gave family legal protection. Hth

You need a criminal lawyer prior to any interview - do not speak to anyone without legal advice.
as it is a criminal case, a lawyer will be provided for your son, but may not be the best.
do not accept a caution as that admits guilt - this will impact your DC for the rest of his life, so not a time to step back or scrimp on costs.
