Making a will - what do I need to know?

My DH and I are about to make a will and I feel completely clueless! I know that we need to appoint a guardian for DD but apart from that I'm not sure what the essentials are. Does anyone have an idiots guide to making a will or can give me some pointers? Thanks in advance xx

first - it is will aid month soon so book a slot, you can get 'mirror' wills for a donation of about £150.

second - to check you are married as you imply, as marrying after the will invalidates it. Divorce doesn't.

now - what do you want to happen to your possessions? When do you want your child to inherit? (and yes, you need a guardian in case you both die before she is independent). Do you want to leave anything to anyone else?

usual hints are to leave percentages, not fixed sums, and not to specify charities directly. Leave a separate note to the executors expressing a wish for a donation to x charity AFTER the relatives are taken care of.

other financial house-keeping asides; keep an up to date list of finances, check pensions nominate each other as death beneficiaries, make sure you each have separate accounts.
