council tax rebanding

Got a letter this week to say that our house had been reassessed and was now in a different council tax band. We've lived here for about 8 years so we are now owed the difference. Obviously, we were thrilled, the money will really come in handy. But when we got the letter from the council with the details of the refund, they have taken this year's council tax off the amount they owe us.

I guess that will cut down our outgoings each month, but we'd rather have the lump sum - after all, it is our money, isn't it? And then carry on paying this year's bill in instalments. I'm going to ring them tomorrow and enquire - can I insist?

Yes, it is lovely - and it is money we didn't know we would get, so we are really pleased. We would just rather have our money back!
