Adult dependent and getting a visa?

How long would you expect this to take? The country they're in is currently in a very worrying position. I'm a British citizen, living in the UK.

I think it depends on a lot of things like which country they're coming from - but from what I've seen from a cousin's non-British spouse, just getting a 3-month tourist visa was not at all easy, and he's professionally qualified and employed.
