Giving term's notice via email?

Hello ladies, first time poster on here but been reading the threads for a while.

We have hedged our bets and paid a deposit for a prep school for dd as our catchment school isnt very good and the next furtherest away is outstanding and oversubscribed. I was planning on waiting to see if dd has got into prefferred state schools (quite a few outstanding in area which i have put down but all oversubscribed) and then hand in notice to the prep. However my friend has warned me if i time it wrong i will be liable for a terms fees.

My question is that if i give notice during the easter holidays and no-one is at school to 'sign for' the signed for letter is it ok to send the letter via email?

Just to add dd is 4 so for primary school. We find out in mid April and term for the prep starts on 24 April.

Most schools accept notice up to the first day of term. Your bill should give clarification of the individual schools policy.

Check with the school whether it is before end of Spring term, or before start of summer term.

Think most would be before start of summer term - but not sure tbh.

My dd goes to a prep school and we would have to give a full terms notice so tell then on the first day in September if they will be leaving at the Xmas etc.

It's worth checking your paperwork as it may be that you just lose your deposit or you could owe them for the summer term.

Thanks for replies so far ladies. I havent got any paperwork. I assume I'll get this when they ask for or i pay the deposit.

We did this and as soon as we found out that DD had for into the state school we wanted I just rang them up and said we didn't need the place and that was that.
Didn't get the deposit but didn't expect to, I suppose it depends on the schools policy. Could you ask them?

if not starting in september notice would have to be first day of summer term if you left it to june you might be liable for fees upto christmas

I just wanted to add for DD's school e-mail is unacceptable for notice it needs to be hard copy (avoid issues with children hacking into e-mail). There is always someone in the bursary to receive such letters so posting by signed for mail would ensure that is received by the correct day.
