Just a quick question -
employers are saying that my wage will be reduced on return to work

I didn't think they could do this legally? Help?

Have they said why it will be reduced? Was your pay previously a mix of salary and bonus?

If you have only taken ordinary maternity leave (26 weeks) you have the right to return to you previous job on the same terms and conditions. If you have taken additional maternity leave you have the right to your previous job or a similar job. Similar means the job has the same or better terms and conditions. See here for the government website outlining your rights.

They have said due to changes in role and slight change to job description to the job I was doing prior to mat leave. However...
I have worked company for a number of years most of which job was say A, B and C which I worked up pay scales doing a year before starting mat leave job changed to being A,B,C and D (so a slight increase in work load) but job didn't change pay or anything at this time). The job they say has now changed as D is no longer required so want to drop wage. They want to drop wage to that of a brand new employee at bottom of scale through

They cannot do that. The new job must have the same or better terms and conditions.

Does it make any difference if I am requesting a reduction in hours?

OP posts:

The hourly rate should still stay the same.
