This is the Legal Matters thread, ie it is people requesting legal information or advice - would the posters who know nothing about legal matters but take the opportunity to comment on posters' situations or decisions please clear off back to AIBU.

I think people who post here accept that the advice given is not a substitute for proper legal advice. Plus sometimes it's nice to have supportive posts from people who have been in a similar situation even if they can't offer legal advice. Can't stop people posting after all!

This is MN. People are allowed to post on any thread as long as they are not in breach of the Talk Guidelines.

Who made you topic monitor?

Sometimes an OP will benefit from a mnetter who is notlegally traineds experience. It may stop them going near a parasite type legal case or help them realise litigation is the way forward.

I agree that supportive posts are nice but a couple of the threads I happened upon before I started this thread were critical and scathing - not what you want to hear when you upset over a problem, and like I suggest more suited to AIBU.

If they are in breach of Talk Guidelines, then report them. But there is no topic monitor. This is an open board.

It's not for any one person to suggest who posts on what thread and how. HQ is concerned with those who break guidelines.

That is the nature of MN and what makes it different from many other boards.

also MN is free. You get what you pay for regarding advice.

Anyone can say what they want but if they break guidelines and it is reported and HQ act then it will be removed.

Of course posters on MN benefit from very excellent non-legal advice. However, if they chose to specifically post in Legal, that would suggest that what they are seeking is knowledge of the law. There are other sections for general advice.

Then go ahead, OP, but as long as it is not a personal attack it is left to stand. This board is different in that respect from many others.

I think it is very helpful to have comments and perspectives from those who have experienced a similar legal issue as it provides balance. I personally try not to post on a thread upon which I hold very negative views as it is not helpful.

Sometimes a purely legal perspective can come across as cold and occasionally critical of those who are newcomers to legal jargon, the adversarial court system and naive as to current thinking. Of course the whole point of using "legal" is just that, to get helpful, impartial legal advice and I have been grateful for that advice in the past.

I agree Elsie - I have contributed to threads where the OP sounds as though she has a similar circumstance to my own and given my own experience. I do think that is helpful, especially if you quantify it as 'this is my situation, yours may be different, do seek legal advice'.

I'm reading this as OP isn't saying you can't post just because you're not legally trained but don't post just to pass a scathing opinion of the circumstances you find yourself in.
