How quickly is a prisoner released after being granted parole?

After an absence of about 5 years I'm back on and hoping someone can help.

My father in law was sentenced to 12 years in 2007 for multiple rape and abuse over a number of years. It was horrific, you name it he did it, starting with a girl who was just 4 (at least thats her earliest memory).

Anyway, he has applied for parole and is awaiting for the parole date to be confirmed and the victims will be given the date in due course. My question therefore is, if he is released when we he actually be back on the streets. Is it the next day or a week later? We just want to be mentally prepared and on guard in case he does get out.

This must be so worrying I can't tell you the answer but the local police should have a community liaison officer or victim support who could advise?

Hi there...really sorry you are going through a stressful time. Obviously each case is different but generally there is a period of time after the parole board sit....for this type of offence (against a child) I would hope there would be a condition of residence at a hostel, in which case he wouldn't be released until there is a space which can delay release. Victim support should keep you updated though and give you a better idea as to any conditions of release if indeed release is granted.

Simple answer is it varies. It would not be same day so don't panic that you could be seeing him on the street any day.

But did you know that a victim can appeal parole before and if its granted.

I did and was successful the bastard served the whole of his measly sentence.

Victims can also request that if the perpetrator is let out on license he has conditions to stay away from their home town (or area of large city) and work place. These requests are almost always granted.

I'm extremely close to the victim and its tough for her right now. We knew at sentencing that he would become eligible for parole after half the sentence so its the time we have been dreading - its amazing how quickly it seems to have come round.

I'm more worried about my husband and how to handle potential risks for our three girls but we have some plans and I hope he just keeps well away. We want to get on with our lives and not have to worry about him trying to approach our children if they play outside or want to go out with friends etc.

He is in his early 70's now and must have thought he got away with it! Thanks Herrenna, I didn't know the victim could appeal, and good for you for standing strong.

Victim support have been terrible by the way, last updated the victim two years ago saying he hadn't accepted his crimes or taken steps to rehabilitate, and she has had to do all the chasing until the recent letter. Apparently its moved from one region to another then someone left, pretty poor really.
