Empty Rental Property - Council Tax

Hello,

Fairly new, wasn't sure where best to post (too many categories!)... fingers crossed.

I rent a flat but I plan to move mid month, earlier than my tenancy agreement end date. I already have confirmation from the landlord that I would be liable for rent until they could fill it with a new tenant or my contract ends (which ever is sooner) - fair enough. I will be renting elsewhere from the council.

Does anyone know what happens with council tax in this situation (rent in 2 areas but only live in one)? Do I pay two council taxes?

In my area you would pay council tax for both until lease is up but at a reduced rate if the property is left completely empty. Think its the same across the board.

Yup, you are liable until your tenancy ceases but if the flat is unfurnished you will very likely get an exemption for a period. The length of the exemption will depend on where you live as councils can now decide on the length of this and the amount of exemption themselves since April.

Many councils have stopped exempting empty, unfurnished properties - the legal requirement to exempt them for the first six months was lifted in April and a lot of local authorities immediately ditched that concession.

Where you live may make a difference to this.
