My brother has signed a caution for "affray"
He said it was a misunderstanding but wouldn't expand, but he works supporting people with moderate disabilities at their homes through an agency, requiring a CRB check.
Will this be likely to end his employment when the CRB is renewed, and how serious is this caution viewed as?

Definitely would show up and as it is a recent thing possibly more serious than if he had had a mad moment as a teenager. If it was a misunderstanding he really shouldn't have signed the caution. He needs to check as well that his job doesn't require him to say immediately if he has been cautioned.

Why did he accept the caution if it was a misunderstanding? Did he seek legal advice?

It will be very tricky for him now, particularly with the sort of work he's doing. Affray is regarded as a violent offence, so not good at all...

Is it seen as similar to assault violence wise?
I will tell him to check at work if it needs to be declared and try to get him to expand on what happened.
With regards being seen as worse as it's more recent, will that mean it is seen as fairly irrelevant after a few years?

I think any job requiring a CRB requires updating if there are changes to criminal record. It will look better on him being honest than it coming up on the update without warning.

It depends on what happened. But, it would be better for him if he told the agency now rather than wait. If he waits it will look like he had something to hide and will be unlikely to get work with them in the future. He needs to act like a professional and talk to them about it now. If he doesn't, he's not likely to get a good reference for the future either.

Also I don't think "affray" is as bad as assault. More just a threat of violence.
