Cheque found but giver recently passed away

We were given a cheque by my grandmother when my DC1 was born, it was written in her name and we hhaven't cashed it. I found it when clearing out for DC2 , only issue is that my grandmother passed away last week.

There isn't anything I can do is there? She was a stonkingly wealthy woman and would have paid no attention to the cheque not being cashed but there was so much going on when DC1 was born we put it with cards in a drawer and that was that.

I think morally it is fine to cash it; she meant your DC to receive the gift, after all.

You won't be able to do anything. Her bank account won't exist anymore.

You can cash/pay in a cheque six month from the day it is written . So it depends how long you have hash the cheque .

Ok. Thats what I thought. I did wonder avout writing to her executors but don't want to sound like a money grabbing bitch!

Guilty now that DC1 has missed out but DC2 won't meet grandmother so I suppose they are at least equal on that score.

As others have said, if its over 6 months old a bank will not accept it. However, you can approach the executor of her will and ask for it to be reissued from her estate.

What minnie says. Presumably her executors will have contacted her bank and frozen her account so the cheque will bounce (will bounce anyway if over 6 months old). Write to the executors and ask for them to reissue the cheque (tho this may take a while as they may have to get probate first).

Her account will exist , it depends how quickly the next of kin deal with things but most banks have a probate dept that will deal with such situations accounts are frozen as such but still have to honor chqs , debit card payments etc but will normally freeze direct debits etc going out .

It is almost 2.5 years old so I will write to my aunt who is the executor and explain (after the funeral) and see what happens.

DH said cash it quick (helpful) but the issue that we have no back a/c in DC1's name still stands. I might add it was his job to set one up

Feel sure executors would honour a payment to a great-grandchild.

It would be very odd if they didn't.
