How 2 set up a charity?

Hi. I'm a sahm.

I have a dream of setting up a small charity (aimed along the lines of sometimes it's just the small things that make a difference in someone's life, rather than making the grand sweeping gesture if you see what I mean?).

I have gone no further than dreaming of what the outline of the charity would be, it's name and starting small to see how it goes before turning it in to, hopefully, more of a national rather than regional charity. So for now it would be a kitchen table affair rather than having offices etc.

I'm happy to start fundraising myself to get something in the pot to start off with and I have several ideas of what I can do to achieve this.

From a formal point of view what are the legal aspects i need to consider?

This is very much in incubation stage at the moment, with a small step forward to making it a reality.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you could give.

Honestly? I would start small, with a constituted group at the beginning. Get a constitution, a committee and a named bank account. Run for a year or so and then when you are confident, work your way through the Charity Commission website guidance.

You would need £5,000 to register the charity, to provide full objectives, identify public benefit, work out how you will obtain funding .....

£5k is income for the charity, not a fee.

Have a look on the Charity Commission website, there is lots of info there about setting up a charity including model documents for creating the legal structure. You don't have to register the Charity with the CC until it has a certain level of income but it is worth checking your charity is compliant from the start.
