Where do I stand re car purchase?

I bought a car a week ago from an independant garage, it seemed fine, had just been MOT'd. 8 years old but comparatively low mileage. I paid 2.5k upfront and financed the rest (in case it's relevant).

Since I brought it home I've noticed a few issues, clunking noise from the gear box at v low speeds, pulling slightly to one side, washer fluid is leaking into rear footwell and the parking sensors don't work.

I've taken it back to the garage today and they've said they'll look at it but I left with a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. What are my rights if they don't fix it?

You have the right to reject the car and get your money back. You have to do that quickly. If you want to go down that route you should reject it as soon as possible and stop using it.

Alternatively if they fail to fix the car properly after being given a proper chance to do so you can get it fixed elsewhere and claim the cost of repairs from them, or you can get your money back less an amount for the time you have used the car.

There is no simple answer to that question. The law says you must reject it within a "reasonable time" but fails to define what that is. It probably needs to be within 3 or 4 weeks of purchase and may be less than that if the problem is obvious.
