Where do I stand? Regarding Royal Mail

Hi, wondering if anyone knows where I stand with this? (Thanks in advance for reading and for any replies).

Having some money trouble atm so sold some bits on eBay, one of them being a jacket. The buyer paid £5 for the jacket, postage was £5 odd.

A week after I posted the coat it's arrived back at my door. The packaging had ripped making the address illegible so Royal Mail returned it to me (luckily my address was still visible on the package).

Not sure where I stand now regarding posting the coat again. I feel I should be entitled to post it again free of charge as they ripped the package and I've paid over £5 for a service that I didn't receive.

If I have to pay myself I'll be more out of pocket than if I hadn't sold the jacket, and I'll be a minus a jacket! It doesn't seem right to ask the buyer to pay either.

Does anyone know what Royal Mail can do, if anything?

You caan report it to Royal Mail but they will almost certainly say that the fault is yours for failing to wrap the coat adequately.

Thank you for that info. I hope you don't mind me asking but I'm quite new to eBay so a bit confused about the lingo, in that link it says I can apply for a final value fee credit, what is that? I'm guessing it's just the fee I paid eBay, right? So if I cancel the transaction I'll still be out of pocket with what I paid for the postage?

The final value fee is the amount you pay eBay depending on the final price, i.e. the buyer's bid. If there was an insertion fee you will not get that back. And you won't get the postage back from anyone unless you can convince the Royal Mail that they are responsible. So I'm afraid you are likely to end up out of pocket.
