Making a will - who gets the children.

DH and I are finally getting around to making a will. We don't have any possessions of any worth at all, it's purely to say what will happen to the DC if anything happens to both of us. We want them to go my sister (who has agreed). I wanted to know if we could write up a will like this ourselves without involving a solicitor? We really can't afford a solicitor but this is something we need to get sorted really. (DC are 9 and 6).

Making a will is important as it is legal document outlining who you like your assets left to when you die. If you do not own your house but have possessions ( although you say of not any worth ) you do have possessions that could go to your children. In respect of who becomes their guardian , in this case your sister, I would discuss this with a solicitors as a verbal decision made now may well change further down the line

Apparently this month it's Will Aid where some solicitors do it free but you have to make a charity donation. There is a link somewhere in the thread ^^

I'd recommend mumblechum1 who has an advert in small businesses (classifieds). She is a qualified lawyer and will writer and has written wills for lots of MNers and charges significantly less than a High Street firm will charge.

Obviously the children are not possessions to be disposed of in a will but left to guardians and Mumbles can advise you on that.

I have had my will done by mumblechum1 and can really recommend her service but another option would be Will Aid which runs next month.

It's worth knowing that you have done things in a way that is legal, a badly written Will is probably worse than no Will at all.
