Car Insurance - Reassure me!

DH has just been given three points on his licence - the endorsed licence came back through the post yesterday.

I've told him he needs to inform the Insurance company straight away, as stated in our policy. We are insured on a multi-car policy, and he is a named driver for my car (and vice versa).

Now I am stressing out, because last week, completely unconnected, I had a car accident - not my fault, and the claim is currently being progressed. DH wasn't in the car.

Obviously, the speeding took place a few weeks before that, although it has taken this long to process through the DVLA; does that mean they will void our policy and stop payment on my claim when they hear about his points, because technically the points were on his licence before I had my accident?

Big stress out! Please reassure me.

No, they will not void your policy or stop payment. The Financial Ombudsman is clear that insurers can only refuse payment if the withheld information is directly relevant to the claim. As your husband wasn't even in the car his speeding points are clearly irrelevant.

In any case, if the accident was not your fault your insurance company should recover the payment from the other driver's insurers.

Thanks for the reassurance. DH wasn't even in the country when I had my accident!

DH has now phoned them with the details and they just said thanks; I'm hoping that's it until we next renew and it may or may not affect the premium.... I won't relax til my claim is settled, though.

Meanwhile my colleague at work spent all afternoon sucking his teeth, making faces and going "oooh, I don't know, you might be in trouble" and getting me even more wound up. The swine.
